Caney Public School Families
At Caney Public Schools, we are committed to protecting the health and safety of our students and staff. We are sharing this information to partner with families and provide clear guidance about how we can work together to prevent measles in our schools.
About measles
Measles is a very contagious virus that spreads through the air. It can spread quickly in schools. A person can spread measles from about four days before a rash appears to four days after it begins.
Vaccination requirements
Oklahoma law requires students to have two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine:
● The first dose on or after the child’s first birthday
● The second dose at least 28 days after the first
Families must provide official immunization records or a statement from a doctor or the Oklahoma State Department of Health.
Medical, religious, and personal exemptions are allowed by law. Approved exemption forms must be on file. Students with exemptions may be asked to stay home during an outbreak.
If a student gets sick
School nurses will check students who have measles symptoms such as fever, rash, cough, runny nose, or red eyes. Students with possible measles symptoms will be separated from others and sent home.
Staying home and returning to school
Students with suspected or confirmed measles must stay home while they are contagious and for at least four days after the rash starts, unless cleared by a doctor or public health official.
Students who are not fully vaccinated may also be asked to stay home for up to 21 days after exposure, based on guidance from public health authorities.
How families can help
● Keep sick children home and seek medical care
● Stay up to date with immunization records
● Follow school and health department guidance
Thank you for helping keep our schools safe and healthy.
